Finished - Till the Next Time ...

-

Our Haiti project was first inspired by Greg Mortensen. He spoke about Pennies for Peace which is an organization that raises money to build schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan for children who are less fortunate than us. The money was raised by kids. We were inspired and took his ideas and thought that we could make a difference too, but this time in Haiti.

The motto of Haiti, “Strength in Unity,” came true at Greenhill. We all worked together in unity from first to fifth graders. Four to five volunteers were scheduled to help out the first five days that we collected money. On the fifth day, students started coming off the steps asking to help. Before we were through we had twelve to fourteen volunteers. We were impressed. We are always getting requests to volunteer. I think we have more dollars than students at Greenhill. This is impressive too! We doubled our goal raising $2,000. All the money we collected will be going to Haiti’s cause through the Red Cross. I think that Greenhill responded boldly to our project to help Haiti. We would like to give thanks to all of the volunteers.

Thanks to everybody for donating over the past two weeks. The past two weeks have been tiring, but fun. Greenhill has made it possible for Haiti to have food, water, and medical supplies. All of the Lower School can take pride in this accomplishment. Many of the students gave up their time and their sleep to help us collect money. Many students brought their own money out of their own piggy banks as an act of generosity.

A very big thanks to Mr. Simpson, Ms. Boulware, Mrs. Rosenberg, Mrs. Flanagan, Mrs. Hall, and our parents.

Sincerely,

Daniel Brickman and Sam Grimsley

Fourth Day

Haiti, in the West Indies, occupies the western third of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. About the size of Maryland, Haiti is two-thirds mountainous, with the rest of the country marked by great valleys, extensive plateaus, and small plains.

Today we collected $209 for a total of $762.79. Today we had all four volunteers spots held. Thanks to our volunteers, we've collected a lot more money than we expected. Haiti can be expecting at least $1,000.

The Answer to today's poll is that Haiti is about the size of Maryland.

Guest Blogger: Sam's Mommy - How did this start?

Above: Sam, Max and Daniel in Mexico when they got their birthday books ...

I would like to share some of the back story of how this particular project started for Daniel and Sam.

In March of 2009, Daniel and his family went to Mexico to visit us (the Grimsley Family) and the Johnson Family. Both our families were living in Mexico at the time.

Max Johnson, Daniel and Sam turned 9 within the same time frame. We gave all three boys the Young Adult version of Three Cups of Tea, a book by Greg Mortenson. Greg's mission is to Promote Peace One School at a Time - you can learn more at http://www.threecupsoftea.com/

Last Fall, Greg Mortenson spoke in Dallas. Nancy, Daniel's mother, invited Sam and me to go listen to him speak. So the four of us went - it was so very inspirational. Daniel and Sam were energized by his messages for educating children (especially girls), increasing literacy and promoting peace. Sam and Daniel decided to start Pennies For Peace at Greenhill, www.penniesforpeace.org, to raise awareness and money for education in the remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Pennies for Peace is Greg Mortenson's program for helping kids to help other kids.

Daniel and Sam had about a million ideas. After the holiday break, they approached Mr. Simpson (Head of Lower School) to present their thoughts for Pennies for Peace. They then met with Ms. Rosenberg (Director of Service Learning and Community Service)to talk with her Ms. Sealy and Ms. Flanagan (4th Grade Humanities, Co-Team Leaders.) Greenhill approved their project! Daniel and Sam were so happy and excited.

As the project was taking off, the earthquake in Haiti occurred. Greenhill and the boys decided to take their passion for helping the world and shift the beneficiary of their efforts to Haiti. Sam and Daniel as well as many, many other Greenhill students expressed true concern for Haiti and wanted a way to give to Haiti.

So here we are ... the volunteers will see ya in Carpool Tomorrow!
